Technologies that I have used during the making of my magazine covers

I used Prezi to evaluate my work for example, I added images of my magazine covers and annotated them. Then posted the finished Prezi on my blogger. I did this by copying the link to embed on to the post in the blogger. By using Prezi I have learnt how to make presentations without using a simple PowerPoint presentation. I have learnt new skills such as creating and editing paths from one slide to another to make the presentaion of the Prezi look professional and easy to use and understand for the users or the examiners.

The main technology that I used for my coursework was the use of Photoshop to create the magazine front cover, contents page and the Double Page Spread. I used Photoshop more often than any other technology during the making of my magazine covers therefore, I have learnt more about this one. For example, I have learnt how to use custom brushes to enhance the quality of the images used, use the layer style tool to add textures and glow to images, text or any other elements, I used the spot healing tool to get rid of any blemishes on the model's face. Also, I used the magnetic lasso tool to crop out any bits of the images I didn't want even though it was hard to use this tool at first as it was quite complicated however, I finally managed to use this tool easily as I used it quite often and by practicing it.

I used iPhoto to view any pictures in my desktop. Using this I was able to upload any pictures I took with the cameras, view the pictures and import the pictures to my folder for me to upload to my blogger later on.



I used the most used social networking website Facebook to get feedback for my work. I did this by uploading JPGs of my music magazine covers to this site on my account where my friends comments on the post. Then I print screened these and posted them on the blogger as evidence of my feedback. By doing this I learnt about the mistakes I had made then I improved my covers according to the feedback comments.









 



By using blogger I was able to keep track of my coursework and post my work on it for the examiner to see. I have learnt to create new posts, add images, videos, links and publish my work. I could also check if my links, videos and images are working properly by viewing the blog.

I used Flickr to annotate the JPGs of my magazine covers and posted it on my blogger. I did this by embedding the link of the covers on Flickrs on the post in blogger so that when the images are clicked on in my blogger post the link takes the user to the annotations in Flickr.

This is a drawing of my target audience who is a female teenager aged between 16-20. She would be interested in music, pop stars and the latest gossips about them. As my magazine consists of lots of latest gossips, new trends and stories about pop stars, she would be interested in reading my pop magazine.

My target audience would shop in retail shops such as, Primark, New Look as these shops are targeting the young females. Also, these shops are likely to have fashionable clothes and my target audience would be fashionable.

They would watch tv programmes like Easteneders, Hollyoaks, Celebrity Juice and Take Me Out because these programmes are about scandals, fashion, celebrity life and fun to watch and teenage girls would often relate to these issues.

My target audience would buy my magazine because its full of excitement, latest gossips and latest trends which normally teenagers would associate with.

The image on the left is from the existing magazine 'top of the pops'. I will be comparing the main image used in it with the image I used for my front cover. The picture of Tulisa that they have used is a very attractive as it's a positive pose. She is smiling and this portrays a positive attitude towards her and the magazine. The picture that I have used is not as positive because the model is not smiling however, the pose that she is delivering is suitable for a pop genre music magazine because it shows an attitude which is necessary to attract the audience.

The shot type that I have used is a medium shot which is the same as the original picture from 'top of the pops' magazine. I used this type of shot because most pop genre magazines use this shot type for example, 'top of the pops' and it suits as well because with a medium shot you can see the expressions and postures properly. Also, there are angles used on both of the images because on the picture of Tulisa she is tilted to the right and looking directly at the reader. In the image I have used I have taken the picture from the right with the model looking directly at the reader.

The posture of the two pictures are different because Tulisa is posing with her hands on her hips whereas, my model is posing with one hand on her hip and using the other hand to blow a kiss. I have constructed my picture in this way because it is similar to the original pictures from pop magazines in terms of postures and shot types. Also, the expression on Tulisa's face is very friendly because she is smiling which gives a positive impression whereas, the expression on the model of my magazine is not too strong because she is not smiling or moody, she is giving a flirty look.

The costume that has been used for Tulisa is very different to the costume used for my magazine model. Tulisa is wearing a very simple pink top with a very stylish black jacket whereas, my model is wearing a black and white jumpsuit which also looks very stylish. Also, the hair styles of both of these pictures are different because Tulisa has her hair down curled whereas, my model has her hair pinned up.

All of these elements of these two magazines like, the postures, shot types, costumes, layouts and colours illustrate that these magazines are targeted at young females as they are most likely to relate such presentation styles, attitudes and gossips that are included within these magazines.

Overall, through the style of my magazine I have represented young people especially girls as very confident, cheeky and modern individuals. I have done this through the use of presentation such as, the picture posture, angle, shot type, expressions etc.

The image on the top is the existing contents page from the magazine 'top of the pops' and the image below is the content page created by me. I have used this existing contents page to create my contents page. I have copied the idea of different sections however, I have developed this idea by adding different bright colours to the different sections on my contents page whereas, this contents page has an continuing colours which are mainly yellow and pink.

Research and planning analysis of contents page and DPS

I will be using the contents page of the pop magazine called 'top of the pops' in my research task to analyse as it's a pop music magazine and I'm doing my coursework on pop music.

The title of the contents page is called 'inside the mag' in white text with pink background colour, this is very typical of a pop magazine. The language used in this page is very simple for example, the word 'mag' has been used instead of magazine so that it can relate to the audience of the magazine who are younsters. Also, the colours used for this contents page is very smart, mostly pink and other bright colours such as blue, yellow and red. This is very typical and will attract the young readers. the yellow is used to highlight some of the text on the different sections perhaps to drag the attention of the reader to certain parts and make it easier for the reader to notice it or to make it stand out to indicate that these parts are more important than other parts.

One aspect of this contents page that is different from others that I have noticed is that it has a picture of its front cover on the page. This is perhaps done to remind the audience of what the main articles are. Also, the numbers pointing to the article on the front cover is made to make it easier to refer to if the reader is looking for an article on the front cover. The use of a circle to point out the page number looks very interesting as it suits with the rest of the magazine's layout.

There are different sections and subheading on this contents page to split and oragnise the page. And some parts of the text of all sections are highlighted in yellow. This will help the readers who are looking for something in particular for example, celebrities or gossip.

The uses of images are also appropriate for the target audience of this magazine. They have added a picture of a boy band One Direction which goes under the subheading 'wins and offers'. This will attract the people who are fans of this boy band therefore, it will attract them toward this specific section. The editors of this magazine have obviously done this on purpose as One Direction are very relevant to pop music.

This is a double page spread is also from the pop magazine 'top of the pops' which you would normally find inside a pop magazine.

Clearly, this double page spread is from a pop genre magazine because the two main images used are of two popstars from a boy band whose music is pop.
I could also tell this is a pop genre double page spread because of the layout of it's contents, the text are very bold and pop like, the uses of quotation marks and the use of circles on both the images to put quotes in makes the page look pop.

Using two different sections for the two band members is a very clever idea as it will make it easier for the audience because they can see and choose which section to read depending on which one of the boys they like.
I have noticed that the colours used on this double page spread does not relate to the front cover as the cover had mainly bright pink and this double page spread has dull colours like grey, greens and blues.

The page number on this is the same as on contents page, it shows continuity of layout throughout the magazine.

Today I have made some amendments to my front cover. I have added a background colour and added a circle to make it look a bit more like pop. I have also added almost like a banner at the bottom with some of the popstars names, this is to make the layout look more like pop as my research on pop magazines show that most pop magazines have these types of layout.

This is a print shot of a conversation between me and a friend where she gave some feedback on the front cover of my pop magazine. I will now consider these points to improve the front cover.

For my second Photoshoot I needed a medium shot picture of the two characters of my story for the double page spread. On the day of shooting I took a various number of different shot type and chose the most appropriate one.

Today I have added more text on the double page spread as there was too much blank space. Also, I added words in speech marks on the blank spaces of the image.

Research and planning 2nd photoshoot

I have carried out another photo shoot with my models yesterday on the 15th of January for my double page spread image.

This is the first picture I took in my second photo shoot for the double page spread. I could use this picture but it doesn't have the right attitude to match the genre and the quality of the photo is poor. Therefore, I won't be using this picture for my double page spread.

Even though this picture has the right attitudes and perfect expressions I wouldn't use it for my double page spread because the quality of the picture very poor. The lighting is low key and so you can't see the expressions very well.

In this photo you can see the expressions of the model on the right however, the other model doesn't have any expressions on her face. Also, the lighting on the right side is fine though, the lighting on the left is poor and dark therefore I wouldn't use this image for my double page spread.

I woudn't use this image for the double page spread even though it has good attitudes and expressions because first of all, the quality of it is bad, it's very blurry. Also, the positioning of the models isn't right as one side of the model on the left is cut off which doesn't look very professional.

I wouldn't use this image either as you cannot see one of the models expressions as she is looking the other way. Also, the image has come out very dark so it wouldn't look good on the double page spread.

This is the image I will be using for my double page spread it has the right attitude for the magazine genre. Also, the lighting of the picture and the positioning of the models are perfect for the double page spread. In this picture the expressions match with the storyline it shows that the main model Faith's disgusted by the attitudes and behavior of her friend.

Research and planning changes to DPS

This lesson I have changed the layout and the pictures on the double page spread. The previous picture had a brick wall background hence, didn't suit the genre. I have now changed the background  of the picture to white so that it matches with the double page spread and I can play around with the text on the image in the page.
